Mobile phones have been a major source of communication since the last 10 years. A lot of emphasis has been laid upon making the use of mobile phones more comfortable and making the phones very versatile and multifunctional. Firstly the mobiles came with complex interfaces and hard-to-use functionality. With the passage of time the technology kept improving rapidly. And then with the development of iPhone, came the big leap in the development of mobile phone technologies.
The development of iPhone began when Steve Jobs, the CEO, Apple Corporation at that time brought about an idea of having Apple work on tablet Pc. He created a team of engineers for that which investigated on touch screens. This became the base for creation of the iPad and the development of iPhone. This all started when Steve Jobs once in a conference in 2003, said that the world was more demanding for a smarter mobile phone with an excellent synchronizing software rather than having a PDA. This made him divert his attention towards the iPod and the iTunes software. When the software was developed, Motorola developed a mobile phone named as ROKR E1 in 2005 which was the first of its type to be able to use the iTunes. Steve was not happy with this because this prevented apple from designing their own mobile phone. So in 2007, Steve announced the development of the iPhone. Steve also announced that the phone will support third party applications using the safari engine.
iPhone was created in collaboration with AT&T. The cost of the development was about $ 150 million and it took about thirty months. The software and the hardware were made by Apple engineers in-house. Unlike the Motorola developed mobile phone, which was designed by a committee and was a failure.
The iPhone was also labeled as iPhone 2G or iPhone edge. It was announced on January 9, 2007 and introduced six months later in the US. It had the features of Quad-Band with GSM and EDGE. The first model was released with 4GB memory which was enhanced to 8GB later.
In September Apple dropped the prices of 8GB model and discontinued the 4GB model. In that month the iPod touch was also released. This month also saw the sale of one millionth iPhone which took 74 days since release to happen. The early buyers were upset with the price drop so apple gave them store credit.
Apple released the 16 GB model in February, 2008. That year Apple also released the software development kit, which would enable developers to create applications which would be run on iPhone OS version 2.0. The upgrade to this version was free for all iPhone users.
When released, the iPhone was running on “OS X”. The name of the operating system was changed when iPhone OS 2.0 was released on July 11, 2008. The version 2.0 introduced third party applications, exchange support, push email and some other.
The iPhone OS 3.0 was released on June 17, 2009. It introduced copy and paste and some youtube features. The iPhone 2G did not get more upgrades after it because of hardware constraints.
iPhone 3G announced the second generation of iPhones. It was introduced on June 9, 2008. It was very similar to the first iPhone having the same 2MP camera and no video recording. It had 128 MB eDRAM same as the first one. But the improvements came in support to assisted GPS, 3G data and Tri band UMTS/HSDPA.
It was running on Apple iOs. And it got updates till 4.2.1. The later updates were provided on 3GS. The OS had efforts to combat the jailbreaking. Major update in versions was done annually. Like in June 2008, it came with iOS 2.0. One year later, it was provided with version 3.0 which also provided the MMS feature. In June 2010 , it came up with iOS version 4.0 which was succeeded by version 4.1 in September 2010. In November 2010, 3G received major update in version 4.2 which introduced new features like youtube voting and security fixes. However it did not receive any update in safari text searching and multitasking etc.
In March 2011, iOS 4.3 was developed which did not support iPhone 3G. The iPhone 3G was available in both black and white but this facility was only provided in the 16 GB model.
iPhone 3GS was a third generation iPhone which was announced on June 8, 2009. It was a faster phone than 3G and had a better camera than its predecessor. It also had voice control and support for 7.2 Mbit/s HSDPA downloading. It contained multi touch display. After its release, within one week more than a million phones were sold and in the next month the international release took place.
This iPhone also had new boot rooms 2 months after its release to block “24k” was used in previous bootroms which would not block jailbreaking. The new upgrades in 3GS were internal which boasted its speed as the “S” in 3GS refers to speed. Other than that the camera was extended to 3 mega pixel.
iPhone 4G is the fourth generation iphone which was announced on June 7, 2010 and was released on June 24, 2010. The main difference between iphone 4 and its previous versions is the new design. It has a new feature of front-facing VGA camera, and a backside rear-facing camera which records HD video in 720p at 30 frames per second, and a LED flash.
First time Apple introduces in iphone 4, a second microphone which is used for noise cancellation. The iPhone 4 introduces a gyroscopic sensor that detects 3-axis angular acceleration around the X, Y and Z axes.
